Xbox 360 And The Red Ring Of Death - How To Deal With It

The Xbox 360 is a great product when it’s working. Because of this, it makes the red ring of death failure all the more painful. Reliability has never been a strong point of the Xbox.

The usual mode of failure of the Xbox 360 is a general hardware failure otherwise known as the red ring of death. This is the state where the green lights surrounding the on/off button change over to three flashing red lights.

So how do you get your console working again? Most of the time, the answer is that your Xbox has overheated and it needs time to cool off.

Once it has cooled, you can’t just turn it back on as if nothing had happened and expect the overheating problem to magically go away. If the overheating hasn’t damaged your machine, then you’ll have to find ways to keep your Xbox running cool.

The following are a few suggestions:

1.) Run the Xbox in an environment that is cool. Don’t use it in areas exposed to direct sunlight. If you are living in a very warm climate, keep an air conditioner running when operating your Xbox.

2.) Limit the number of hours that you use your Xbox. Refrain from gaming sessions that last more than a couple of hours. Be aware that some games make the console work very hard and therefore make it generate heat more rapidly.

3.) Keep the cooling vents clear of anything that obstructs air from flowing into the Xbox. This means grit and dust within the vents or objects that are blocking the entrance to the vents. The console must not be placed in confined areas that don’t allow the free flow of air.

4.) It’s possible that there’s a source of heat near the console that you are unaware of. It may be a stove, heater vent, furnace, or warm electronics in the vicinity.

5.) The need to cool the power brick or power adapter is often neglected. Make sure that air is able to flow freely into the adapter. Keep it clear of shaggy carpeting and away from confined areas. Try hanging it from it’s cord with a hook.

If these suggestions fix your ring of death problem then congratulations are in order. Otherwise, the overheating has caused hardware damage to occur which will require repair. If you have a valid warranty, you can return your console back to Microsoft or you can send it to a repair shop.
